Time’s arrow appears to be accelerating. Six months ago HFMWeek was dealing with a host of issues that have, to a greater or lesser extent, already been resolved; or simply evolved.

Of the former, both the UK Bribery Act and the FSA’s Remuneration Code have lost their sting. Meanwhile, AIFMD still poses a threat, but also continues to shift, changing – possibly for the better – as EU mandarins add an extra layer of clarity.

In the US, the question is not about current shifts, but about this arrow’s eventual target – the future. Most have already absorbed the realisation that SEC registration is here. More, however, are unsure about exactly what the filing of ADV I and II forms will mean six months hence, as quarterly reporting kicks in and the SEC begins to study the results in earnest.

Could it lead to more reporting? Or will the data be neatly filed away on Federal servers? Only time will tell, but as the industry worries about what will come to pass, this far-sightedness is a good thing. A year ago, many managers were still fighting rear-guard actions against the uncertainty of 2008. Looking ahead was a luxury.

Now, with inflows and launches picking up, managers are beginning to think about the future shape of the sector – a sign that, despite continued uncertainty, some have enough confidence to look ahead, moving as quickly as time’s arrow as they seek to work out where change will take them next.
