The importance of a good education

Pension fund trustees have come under scrutiny lately, from accusations of placement agent kick-backs to criticism of attending education conferences in exotic locations.

But trustee education is important as many board members still struggle to get their heads around the idea of hedge funds.

Mel Aaronson, who is first vice president of the National Conference on Public Employee Retirement Systems (NCPERS), which met for its annual gathering last week, and also on the board of the New York City Teachers’ Retirement System, told HFMWeek that the $40bn pension is rethinking a possible move into hedge funds.

But, as many voiced during the conference, issues such as transparency and fees remain important for investors considering the strategy. “If hedge funds don’t sign up to SEC regulations they could have something to hide,” said Aaronson.

And with investors such as Robert Maynard, CIO of the Public Employee Retirement System of Idaho (Persi), which does not invest in hedge funds, making a good case for ‘conventional investing’ during a presentation for NCPERS, hedge funds need to act fast to educate trustees from their perspective.

According to Maynard, Persi has performed as well as some endowments with creative portfolios. “Over the last 18/19 years, Persi has been in the top decile of the investor space.”
