What's in a name? Priapus Investment Fund

If ever proof were needed that a healthy injection of Greek mythology can be used to give even the basest of business mandates an element of class then the Priapus Investment Fund is it.

The California-based hedge fund – launched in 2008 by management firm AdultVest Inc – was created to invest in ventures from the adult entertainment industry, including websites, adult content libraries and gentleman’s clubs.

Perhaps unsurprisingly, the fund’s moniker has its own sexual identity, taking its name from the Greek fertility god Priapus, the protector of fruit plants, livestock, and male genitalia.

A popular figure in Roman erotic art, Priapus is the subject of a number of frescos and paintings from the era; the most famous of which can be found within the ruins of Pompeii.

An excavated snack bar in nearby Herculaneum also has its own image of the god – considered, according to Wikipedia, a good-luck symbol for the customers. Such sentiment was put to the test in 2009 when one of the fund’s investors accused the fund’s portfolio manager of fraud – a claim that was stringently denied.

Little information is available on the fund’s current status, but focusing on one of the few industries generally considered to be recession-proof can’t have hurt its chances.
