Hedge fund launches dip in Q3

The hedge fund industry remains on course for its best annual launches total since 2007, despite a small decline in the third quarter of the year, data from Hedge Fund Research (HFR) suggests.

The number of liquidations also rose slightly from the quarter prior, as the industry reacted to a sustained period of uncertainty brought about by the European debt crisis. However, the quarter was once again in net launches.

Launches in Q3 2011 fell to 265, down from 280 in quarter before. Liquidations, meanwhile, increased by 22 on Q2 2011, up to 213.

Hedge fund launches remain on pace for their highest calendar year total since nearly 1,200 funds launched in 2007, HFR said.
