Texas Uni makes new long/short equity hire

The Board of Regents for the $670m Texas Tech University endowment approved a new hedge fund allocation at the end of 2009.

The board awarded $12m to Glenrock Global Partners as part of a move to hire more global long/short equity managers.

The university made an allocation of $10m to Hunter Global Investors in August, and hired Van Eck Hard Assets Portfolio and Blenheim Capital in November.

At the time, the Texas Tech University Endowment allocated around 18.5% to absolute return (not including Van Eck and Blenheim) out of a target of 25%, leaving a potential $43.5m to invest in the strategy.

Eric Fisher, manager of treasury services, told HFMWeek in November that the investment team was also in the process of shifting the endowment’s hedge funds to different categories, such as equity-like hedge funds, absolute return and global macro.

Other hedge funds in the portfolio include Ariel, GMO,  King Street, Taconic, Shepherd Investments, Alson, Davidson Kempner, Wexford, OZ Asia, Fir Tree and Silver Point.
